General Spider  Dream Meanings

Before we go into more detail on different types of spider dreams, I thought you might be interested in a list of some common themes when it comes to dreaming about spiders. Depending on the context of your dream, one or more of these qualities might give you some insights into what your dream is telling you:

  • Ancient wisdom
  • Illusion
  • Interconnection
  • Anxiety
  • Fear
  • Vulnerability
  • Feeling trapped
  • Control
  • Mystery
  • Creativity and artistry
  • Manifestation
  • Spirituality
  • Cycle of life and death
  • Web of life

Many people are afraid of spiders. Indeed, there’s even a term for it, which is arachnophobia. And it’s deemed a phobia because it is usually an irrational fear as spiders generally do not harm people. So, how you interpret these suggestions for the meaning of your dream will be very dependent on how you feel about spiders generally. Here are some of the common types of spider dreams and some details on what they might mean:

1. Giant Spider Dream Meaning

Spider Dream

Depending on how you perceive spiders in general, dreaming about a giant spider can signify that you feel overwhelmed or anxious in some area of your life. As the saying “making mountains out of molehills” goes, your subconscious could be over-focusing on something that’s disturbing you. Nevertheless, the giant spider, like a giant elephant in the room, is commanding your attention.

Consider what in your life is making you feel vulnerable or trapped. If your giant spider dream is making you feel anxious, you might want to do some visualization techniques where you imagine trapping the spider and setting it free in a wild place. Or, you might envision it getting smaller and smaller.

A dream of a giant spider that feels more positive might signify that you have more control over a situation than you think you do. As well, it can signify that you have the power to manifest your desires on a grand scale, like a spider spinning their web.

Furthermore, dreaming of a giant spider could represent that you want to be part of a broader collective experience. This could mean creatively, socially, or with work.

2. Black Spider Dream Meaning

Dreaming of a black spider could mean that you are intrigued with something mysterious or you are searching for deeper meanings around an issue.

The color black signifies mystery, discretion, formality, elegance, and rebellion. So, dreaming of a black spider can also mean that you want to generate more of these qualities in your life.

If you dream of a black widow and you feel anxious in your dream, it can signify that you have some issues with a powerful female figure in your life, or that you are struggling with strong female aspects of your personality.

Additionally, a black spider dream might be a sign that you need to empower yourself, break free of the status quo, and do your own thing.

3. White Spider Dream Meaning

Dreaming of a white spider can hold different meanings depending on the context of your dream and the emotions you felt.

For example, the color white represents fresh starts and new beginnings. So, your white spider dream might mean that you are about to embark on a new creative or spiritual journey. So, clear out the cobwebs in your head and trust your instincts and imagination.

A white spider dream can also mean that you’re starting fresh in terms of having a new attitude about things, such as letting go of past traumas or negative experiences, so you can move forward with a clean slate. In general, spider dreams are empowering, as these arachnids are very intelligent.

Finally, the color white is also associated with spiritual enlightenment and connection to the divine. So, dreaming of a white spider can mean that you are connecting with the spiritual plane as you sleep and your interconnection with your Higher Power.

4. Brown Spider Dream Meaning

As with black and white spider dreams, dreaming about a brown spider can have a few different meanings.

Brown is a natural and earthy color, which symbolizes a sense of security, stability, and comfort. And for many of us, the most common spider we see in our wakeful state is the brown house spider.

While some people are afraid of these spiders, they serve an important role in keeping insect populations in balance.

So, having a positive dream about a brown spider can mean that you feel secure and grounded in your own space. It can also imply that you feel balanced at a domestic level.

Likewise, if you dream about a brown spider and you feel anxious or otherwise upset in your dream, it can signify that you should address some issues that make you feel unsettled or insecure. The brown spider can signify that you should put some extra effort into things that make you feel more grounded, stable, and secure. This could extend beyond your home base to how you feel physically, at work, and in your relationships.

5. Dreaming of a Red Spider

In the animal kingdom, the color red can signify danger as a red insect or arachnid, like a spider, can be poisonous or sting. So, dreaming of a red spider can be construed as a warning or something trying to get your attention. So, a red spider dream can be like a wake-up call.

The color red is also associated with strong emotions, such as passion, anger, and romantic love, as well as energy.

So, your red spider dream can be a sign to empower yourself in some way. This could mean creatively. Or it could mean to use the practice of visualization and manifestation to create better outcomes. Your red spider might be telling you to up the intensity of your efforts.

6. Spider Bite Dream Meaning

As with dreaming about a red spider, dreaming of a spider biting you is like a wake-up call.

A spider bite dream can mean that you feel vulnerable or less than powerful in some way. It might also signify that you feel trapped and are ready to break free of constraints that are holding you back.

Likewise, dreaming of getting bit by a spider can also mean you need to exert more protection over some area of your life. In other words, you might need to establish more personal boundaries.

For example, you might need to create more distance between yourself and toxic relationships in your life. People who are negative, who complain, or who don’t know how to be happy can have a poisonous effect on those around them. Just as spiders symbolize the cycle of life and death, dreaming of a spider bite in a dream can mean that it might be time to cut some ties.

7. Dream of Killing a Spider

Dreaming about killing a spider can mean that you are trying to overcome or eliminate fears or anxieties that are hidden within your subconscious. What’s important when trying to address these issues is not “throwing the baby out with the bathwater” so to speak. In other words, it’s important to not lay blame in areas that are not to blame.

It’s very easy for us humans to project our negative emotions onto others, particularly those we are with on a regular basis. We might think another person or a situation is the cause of our own unhappiness. When in truth, it’s something inside of us.

As mentioned earlier, in reality, spiders serve a critical role in keeping natural ecosystems in balance. So, dreaming of killing a spider can also be a way of your subconscious asking you: Is this really the source of your dissatisfaction?

8. Spider’s Web Dream Meaning

Spider's Web

Dreaming about a spider’s web can hold some simple as well as deeply spiritual and philosophical meanings.

To begin, it can mean that you feel fearful about being caught up in a situation or circumstances from which you cannot escape or have no control.

Another interpretation of a spider’s web dream is that you feel the need to take some control in an area of your life, to organize it, give it more structure, or simply to create it so it’s more to your preferences.

It can also mean that you are tapping into your creative power as you sleep and your subconscious is working on ways to manifest your desires.

In addition, your spider’s web dream could be encouraging you to pay closer attention to the important relationships in your life.

Deeper and Broader Spiritual Meanings

On a deeper level, dreaming of a spider’s web can indicate a connection to greater aspects of the workings of the Universe. For one, you may be cluing more deeply into the concept that everything in life is interconnected. Indeed, everything in the Universe is interconnected.

In addition, it could signify a higher spiritual calling or further study. For example, there is a theory in sacred geometry whereby the spider’s web is a symbol for a concept that is sometimes referred to as Indra’s Jeweled Net. The Net represents the interconnection of collective consciousness.

In visualizing this Net, at each juncture, there is a gem. The gems reflect all of the other gems within what is a cosmic matrix. The gem also represents a life, a soul, a cell, an atom, or even a unit of consciousness. And every gem is intrinsically connected to every other gem by silken threads. And what impacts one gem in the Net has an impact on the rest of the web.1 So, you can see how dreaming of a spider’s web is not something to simply brush aside! (No pun intended.)

9. Biblical Meaning of Spiders in a Dream

From a biblical perspective, spider dream meaning is generally positive. In fact, spiders are seen as protective entities in the Judeo-Christian beliefs.

For example, there is a Hebrew story about David in which he hides from the pursuit of King Saul in a cave. A spider comes along and weaves a protective web across the entrance of the cave, which causes the king’s men to assume no one had entered the cave for a long time.

Then, in Proverbs 30:28, the spider is depicted as a humble yet exalted figure: “… a spider can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings’ palaces.”

The line describes the humbleness and vulnerability of the spider, yet its ability to make silk wins the favor of kings. In other words, those who diligently do their work with humility will win God’s favor.

So, the biblical meaning of dreaming about a spider or spiders should generally be construed as positive.

Summary

Dreaming about a spider or spiders can have a variety of meanings depending on the context and details of your dream, as well as your personal feelings about spiders. While many people fear spiders, they have a number of positive attributes. Thus, hopefully learning more about different spider dream interpretations can bring added insight into what your dream is telling you.
